ABOUT STYLE

Art Nouveau (from the French “l’art nouveau” – “new art”) – a style in the art of the end of the XIX – beginning of the XX century, mainly in architecture, fine and decorative and applied art, and consisted in the rejection of imitation of classical forms and searches new style Artists drew inspiration from nature, folk architecture, and also admired Japanese art and its attraction to clean, unencumbered by decor, planes.

The style has acquired different names in different countries. In Belgium and France – “new art” (French: L’Art Nouveau), in Germany – “young style” (German: Jugendstil), in Italy – “floral style” (Italian: stile floreale) or “Liberty style”, in Great Britain – “modern style” (English modern style), in the USA – “Tiffany style” (English Tiffany style), in Austria, Ukraine – “Secession”, in Scandinavian countries – “national romanticism”.

ABOUT PROJECT

Recently, the city of Lviv joined the international Reseau Art Nouveau Network (RANN), which is engaged in the study and popularization of the heritage of Art Nouveau, or Secession or Art Nouveau, as it is commonly called in Ukraine. Therefore, Lviv now has a platform for popularizing the heritage of the Art Nouveau style at the international level, and for four years, together with European partners, it will implement the project “Art Nouveau: a new Eurotopia. How the past can be a bridge to a sustainable future” (“AN as a New EUtopia”).

The project is implemented with the support of the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) of the European Commission and will last from January 2024 to September 2027. You can follow the project’s activities in the project’s social networks: Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn.

PHOTO CATALOG

The most interesting Art Nouveau sites in Lviv have been selected for a photo catalog that features over two hundred unique examples of early 20th-century architecture. The publication presents the most expressive works of the style — from monumental administrative buildings to elegant villas and residential townhouses.

The catalog is divided into thematic sections that reveal the diversity of Lviv’s Secession:
architectural compositions, sculptural and painted decoration, carpentry, and decorative metalwork. Each section is accompanied by photographs that highlight the beauty of details — from façades to interiors, from wrought-iron elements to polychrome finishes.
