Alfred Zachariewicz

1871-1937

He was born in Lviv into the family of architect Julian Zachariewicz. He received his education at the Franz Joseph I Gymnasium in Lviv, the Higher Real School (1887–1890), and continued his studies at the Lviv Polytechnic (1890–1895) and the Vienna Polytechnic (1895–1896). From 1897 to 1900, he worked as an assistant at the Department of Construction at Lviv Polytechnic.

From 1892 to 1901, he was an employee of Ivan Levynskyi’s design bureau. In 1899, he became a member of the Polytechnic Society in Lviv. In 1902, he founded his own architectural bureau and construction company in partnership with Józef Sosnowski, involving engineer Michał Finkelstein in the enterprise. After successfully passing his second state examination in 1903, he obtained a license for construction in Lviv.

That same year, he established the largest reinforced concrete manufacturing plant in Galicia, enabling him to actively develop industrial construction. By 1914, his company, applying the innovative construction techniques of François Hennebique, had built over 200 bridges across Galicia.

In June 1908, he became one of the founders of the “Circle of Polish Architects in Lviv.” He was also a co-owner of the confectionery factory “Dr. Jan Rucker i Sp.” on Zamarsstynivska Street. From 1908 to 1914, he served as the honorary consul of Denmark in Lviv.

Additionally, he was engaged in the development of construction technologies and the introduction of modern structural solutions into urban architecture. Thanks to his work, Lviv became a center for advanced engineering solutions in bridge construction and industrial production.
