Formation of the Street

Zelena Street is one of the oldest and longest streets in Lviv, stretching approximately 8.85 km. It was first mentioned in 1544 under the name “Voloskyi Mist” as it was part of a trade route to Moldova. In 1676, it received the name “Zelena” (Green) due to the numerous groves it passed through. During the Austrian rule from 1792, the street was officially named “Grünenstrasse.” In the 19th century, the street passed through a sparsely populated area where palaces of the Zamoyski, Jablonowski, Russocki, and other noble families were built. Active development of the street began in the second half of the 19th century when it became an important transport artery of the city.
