Formation of the Street
Ivana Kotliarevskoho Street was formed in the late 19th – early 20th century as part of the Kastelivka district development, based on the “garden city” concept. It was designed by leading architects including Ivan Levynskyi and Julian and Alfred Zachariewicz. The street, originally called “Na Villakh” and later “Nabielaka,” has been named after Ukrainian writer Ivan Kotliarevsky since 1946. It features regular layout, greenery, and many buildings in the Secession, Art Nouveau, and Functionalist styles.
Builders and Styles
Building No. 9 was constructed around 1907–1910, most likely with the participation of architects from the Levynskyi school. It follows the Viennese Secession style, featuring a symmetrical facade, vertical elements, floral stucco decoration, and a central oriel. The balconies have wrought-iron railings, and the roof is steep with attic finishes.
Who Was the Owner?
The original owners are not clearly identified. According to prewar address books, residents included engineers, clerks, and university professors. In the 1930s, the building was owned by a family of lawyers and partially rented out.
What Does the Building Look Like?
This is a three-story structure with a prominent attic level. The facade is symmetrical with a central oriel and side window niches. The facade is finished in pastel tones and retains original stucco ornamentation. The entrance includes original Art Nouveau-style doors with decorative glass.
