House of Finkler

Formation of the Street

Brativ Rohatyntsiv Street is located in the historic center of Lviv, in the Halytskyi district. It was laid out at the end of the 18th century on the site of dismantled city fortifications. Along the current street ran the High Wall with towers: Kozhumiak, Zolotariv, Honchariv, Kotliariv, Empty Tower, Jewish, and Shevska. Under the current buildings on the even side of the street ran the Low Wall with bastions built in the 15th century. The Austrian authorities began dismantling the city fortifications in 1777, and in 1787 announced the sale of the southern part of the city walls with towers and adjacent plots, which gave rise to the current street, then called Nova (New Street). Later, the street changed names: Sobieskiego (1871–1941), Königstraße (1941–1944), Komsomolska (1944–1991). The current name, in honor of brothers Yuriy and Ivan Rohatynets, active members of the Lviv Stauropegion Brotherhood, was given in 1991.

Builders and Styles

Building No. 12 on Brativ Rohatyntsiv Street was constructed in 1911–1912 on the site of two previous 18th-century tenement houses. The facade is adorned with reliefs, notably honoring “Labor” and “Science,” typical of this style.

Who Was the Owner?

In the early 20th century, the plot was owned by a prominent Lviv entrepreneur who decided to erect a new tenement house on the site of two old buildings. Construction was completed in 1912. During the interwar period, various shops and workshops operated on the ground floor.

What Does the Building Look Like?

The building has four floors with an attic.
