Formation of the Street

Soiuzu Ukrainok Street, situated in the Shevchenkivskyi district of Lviv, boasts a rich and multifaceted history. First documented in 1893, it was originally named Piastiv Street, honoring the Polish royal Piast dynasty. In 1946, as part of the Soviet policy of toponymic Russification, the street was renamed after Russian mathematician Nikolai Lobachevsky, who had no direct connection to Lviv or Ukraine. This renaming reflected the Soviet authorities’ intent to emphasize Russian cultural presence in the city.

In September 2022, amid efforts of decolonization and derussification, the Lviv City Council decided to rename the street in honor of the Union of Ukrainian Women—the largest women’s organization in Ukraine, established in Lviv in the early 20th century. This organization played a significant role in the cultural, educational, and civic life of Ukrainian society. The official inauguration of the street under its new name took place on May 14, 2023, coinciding with Mother’s Day.

The street’s development occurred in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, featuring predominantly two- to four-story buildings constructed in the styles of classicism and ornamental Art Nouveau. These architectural styles impart a distinctive historical and aesthetic character to the street.
