Residential Building

Formation of the street
Academician Kateryna Yushchenko Street lies in Lviv’s Shevchenkivskyi District, in the Pidzamche neighborhood. Established around 1910 as an extension of older city routes, it carried several names: Lubomirskich, Zieleniewskigasse, Sofiya Kovalevskaya, and since 2022 it honors Ukrainian cyberneticist Kateryna Yushchenko. The street consists of three‑story townhouses built in Classical and Ornamental Secession styles between 1910–1914.

Builders and style
House No. 3, built in 1909, represents Rational Post-Secession. It features a three-story symmetric brick façade, light stucco ornamentation, window surrounds, and a central light transom above the door. The architectural composition is subdued and typical for its era.

First owner
The original owner in the interwar period was Ella Eidelshelmová. In 1916, the property was transferred to the Mortgage Bank, likely due to financial issues. It was later nationalized after WWII and is now co-owned by apartment residents and managed communally

Appearance
The three-story brick house with a basement has a symmetrical façade, segmental arches on the ground-floor windows, and straight lintels above. The façade retains original stucco detailing and restrained Secession decorative elements. The entrance gate is a rare intact wooden example from the interwar period.

Interesting facts

  • The building still retains its old wooden gate — one of the last of its kind on the street.

  • The street commemorates Kateryna Yushchenko — the first woman in the USSR with a Doctor of Cybernetics, instrumental in developing early high-level programming languages and computer systems like MEOM and Kyiv.

What is there now?
Today, House No. 3 serves as a residential building with apartments on all floors.
