Residential Building

Street Formation

Ivana Hushalevycha Street is a short, quiet street in the Zaliznychnyi District of Lviv. It begins at Yaroslav Mudryi Street and was formed in the early 20th century as an offshoot of what was then Józef Bem Street (now Yaroslav Mudryi Street).

Originally, the street was called Proviantova, named after nearby Austro-Hungarian military food supply warehouses, some of which still exist between today’s Shevchenka and Olena Stepanivna Streets. In 1993, the street was renamed in honor of Ivan Hushalevych (1823–1903), a Ukrainian priest, poet, playwright, public figure, and member of both the Galician Sejm and the Austrian Parliament. Hushalevych was known for his pro-Russian (Moscophile) views, which were reflected in his literary and public activities.

One of the most notable buildings on the street is the villa of architect Bronisław Bauer (No. 5), constructed in 1891–1892 in the picturesque historicist style. The building features a tower with a steep pyramidal roof, multicolored roof tiles, majolica, and stained-glass windows. A carved wooden veranda is preserved on the side façade. After the Soviet occupation, the villa was repurposed as a preschool.

Today, Ivana Hushalevycha Street retains its residential character and historical atmosphere, combining architectural heritage with modern urban life.
