House of Antoni Jakubski

Formation of the Street

Ivana Kotliarevskoho Street is located in the historic Kastelivka district, which began to develop actively at the end of the 19th century. Initially, the street was named Nabielaka, in honor of Polish poet Ludwik Nabielak. During the German occupation in 1942, it was renamed Schillergasse. In 1944, the previous name was restored, and in 1946, it received its current name — in honor of Ivan Kotliarevsky, a Ukrainian writer and playwright.

The street’s development features various architectural styles, predominantly Viennese Secession, historicism, modernism, and functionalism. Most buildings are listed in the Register of Local Architectural Monuments of Lviv.

Builders and Styles

Building No. 17 on Ivana Kotliarevskoho Street was constructed in 1910–1911 based on a design by architect and builder Józef Hornung. This three-story tenement house is situated in a row of buildings. Its plan and decor mirror the forms of the adjacent building No. 19. The building’s style is Secession.

Who Was the Owner?

The project was commissioned by Antoni Jakubowski, who was also the first owner of the building.

What Does the Building Look Like?

The building has an L-shaped plan configuration. In front of the facade, flower beds are arranged; behind the main structure, in the depth of the block, there is a garden. In the center of the facade, beneath a triangular balcony-canopy, there is a portal; on the right side, there is a projection topped with a gable, which features a majolica panel.
