Formation of the Street

Ivana Kotliarevskoho Street is located in the historic district of Kastelivka in Lviv. This area began active development at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries as part of the “garden city” concept. Initially, the street was named “Na Villakh,” then in 1895, it was renamed Ludwik Nabielak Street, in honor of the Polish poet and political figure. During World War II, it was renamed Friedrich Schiller Street, and since 1946, it has borne its current name, honoring Ivan Kotliarevsky.

Building No. 23 was constructed in 1910–1911, becoming part of the street’s ensemble development. It forms an architectural pair with the neighboring building No. 25, together creating a trapezoidal block with its apex facing the street’s curve.

Builders and Styles

The project for Building No. 23 was developed in the architectural bureau of Ivan Levynsky. It is likely that architect Oleksandr Lushpynskyi, who worked in Levynsky’s bureau, was the direct author of the project. The building is a vivid example of Secession-style architecture with elements of Neoclassicism, characteristic of early 20th-century Lviv.

Who Was the Owner?

The first owner of the building was Czesław Jankowski. He commissioned the project and financed the construction of the tenement, which later became part of the prestigious residential development of the area.

What Does the Building Look Like?

Building No. 23 is a four-story tenement situated on a hillside. The building’s plan is L-shaped with two wings — northern and eastern — positioned at a right angle. The facade is distinguished by a rounded corner, encircled by balconies on all floors, giving the building expressive plasticity. The windows are rectangular and unframed, and the roof has a complex structure with massive spires above the gables.
