Street Formation

Kostya Levytskyi Street is located in the Lychakiv district of Lviv and is one of the city’s main arteries. Its history dates back to the 17th century when it was known as “Na Rurakh” due to a wooden water pipeline that ran here from Pohulianka to the city. In 1885, the street was renamed after Polish poet Jan Kochanowski. During the German occupation from 1941 to 1944, it was called Breitegasse (Wide Street), and from 1950 to 1992, it was known as Mayakovsky Street. In 1992, the street was renamed in honor of Kostya Levytskyi, a prominent Ukrainian political and public figure, head of the government of the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic.

The street’s development occurred mainly at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, featuring multi-apartment buildings in styles such as Viennese classicism, Art Nouveau, and constructivism. It became an important transportation artery, with tram routes No. 3 and No. 6 operating here from 1908 to 1963.
