Residential Building

Formation of the Street

Mahazynova Street is located in the Zaliznychnyi District of Lviv, in the Pryvokzalna neighborhood. Its name originates from the commercial warehouses (“mahazyny” in Ukrainian) that were concentrated in this area at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Mahazynova Street was officially established in 1913 as part of a new planning grid that encompassed the area near the railway station and military barracks.

Before that time, the territory belonged to the southern edge of the historic Klepariv district and remained sparsely populated due to the dominance of military infrastructure. As early as the 1840s, the area was home to the Imperial-Royal artillery barracks, and nearby squares were used for drill exercises. After the railway station was built in 1861 and railway traffic intensified, the district began to change its functional role. Gradually, residential and commercial streets developed here, intended for railway workers, small traders, and craftsmen. The growth of the street was part of the broader modernization of Lviv’s urban space and the city’s active expansion toward the southwest at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

About the Building

Builders and styles
Building No. 4 on Mahazynova Street was constructed in 1906–1907. Its architectural features — including decorative stucco, facade symmetry, and window forms — are consistent with the Secession or early modernist style.

Who was the owner?
There is no publicly available information about the building’s original owner in the published registers or historical documents. It was likely constructed as a rental house for railway workers or members of the middle class.

What does the building look like?
This is a three-story residential building with a symmetrical facade topped by a simple cornice. At the center is the main entrance with an overhead balcony. The facade is adorned with restrained ornamentation typical of Lviv’s Secession architecture. The shape and size of the windows, as well as the stucco details, indicate its construction in the early 20th century.
