Villa of Architect Ludwik Wierzbicki

Formation of the Street

Metrologichna Street in Lviv is located in the Frankivskyi district, in the Novyi Svit neighborhood. It begins at Kotliarevskyi Street and ends in a cul-de-sac. Initially, until 1917, the street was called “Strila” (“Arrow”) because it branched off from present-day Horbachevskoho and Kotliarevskyi streets at a sharp angle. In 1936, it was renamed in honor of Albin Fleszar, a Polish geologist and military officer who participated in World War I. During the German occupation, starting in May 1942, it was called “Stiftergasse” after Friedrich Schiller, the German poet and playwright. In July 1944, its previous name, Fleszar, was reinstated. The current name, “Metrologichna,” is linked to the presence of metrological institutions on the street, particularly divisions of the State Enterprise “Lvivstandartmetrologiya.”

Architects and Styles

This individual residential building — a villa — was constructed in 1904–1905 based on a design by the architectural bureau of Józef Sosnowski and Alfred Zachariewicz.

What Does the House Look Like?

The two-story house is situated on a narrow corner plot as a freestanding structure, surrounded by a garden and flower beds. The rectangular layout is enlivened by projecting wall sections and risalits. The architectural composition is given dynamic expression by the sharp silhouettes of triangular gables and varying cornice heights. The house combines elements of the “Zakopane style” with the formal language of Secession (Art Nouveau). The carved wooden details are the dominant feature of the decorative design. Before renovation, the house also featured a unique wall-mounted sundial.
