Hotel “Krakivskyi”

The corner tenement house with Doroshenko Street was built in 1905-1906 by the architectural bureau of Michal Ulyam and Zygmunt Kendzerski, according to the project of architects Tadei Obminski and Filemon Levytski in the ornamental secession style.

Formation of the street
Kostyushka Street is located in the Halytsky district of Lviv, near the historical center. It connects Doroshenko Street with General Grihorenko Square and Listopadovoy Chin Street. Named after Tadeusz Kosciuszko, previously it had the names Fresnelgasse and Wintergasse. The length is 335 m, the building is presented in the styles of classicism, historicism and Viennese secession.

Who is the owner?
Also known as the “Home of Ukrainian Students”, it belonged to the Scientific Society named after T. Shevchenko and actually served as a dormitory for students studying in Lviv higher schools and was an important center of Ukrainian students in Lviv, founded by the Ukrainian public with the generous help of Ye. Chikalenko – a Transnistrian patron, a well-known publicist and publisher, as evidenced by the inscription in golden letters on the marble commemorative tablet. In November 1928, during the Polish pogrom of the Academic House, the table was destroyed.

What does the house look like?
The building is located at the eastern end of the quarter, at the corner of Kostyushka Street, 1 (eastern facade) and Doroshenko Street, 20 (southern facade), and the rear northern facade overlooks Yuriy Drohobych Street (No. 1-А). Previously, there was a hotel “Narodna gostinnytsia”, and in the 1920s – a cafe and restaurant “Republika”.

Interesting facts
On the first floor of the building was the Union bank, on the other floors there were various Jewish organizations, including the sports club “Gasmonaia” and the photo studio “Kordian”. There was also a film warehouse and a Paramount rental office here. Until the beginning of the 21st century, the entrance to a large deli was located in the same building, and a bas-relief of Mercury, installed in the 90s of the 20th century, hung on the corner of Svobody Avenue until 2005.

What is here now?

Today, the building houses administrative and office institutions, including the Lviv Research Institute of Forensic Examinations and the Court of Appeal of Lviv Region.
