Residential Building

Formation of the square

Markiyan Shashkevych Square is located in central Lviv, established around 1913 to honor the Ukrainian poet and public figure. Built on a reclaimed lot, it became a key civic space framed by Mateyka, Bandera, and Stavropihiyska streets. Since its opening, the square has hosted public gatherings, cultural events, and—even during Soviet times—ceremonial occasions. Its historical name was restored in 1991.

Builders and style

Residential Building No. 3 was constructed in 1911–1912 as part of a unified urban ensemble. Designed by the architectural team of Ivan Levynskyi and Yosyp Delkevyj, the building exemplifies geometric modern with decorative Secession elements: symmetrical façades adorned with mascarons or console motifs, framing an architecturally coherent plaza.

Who was the owner?

Initially commissioned by civic cultural foundations responsible for developing the square. During the Soviet period, the building was nationalized and used for residential and office purposes. Today, it remains a co-owned apartment building managed by its residents via municipal structures.

What does the building look like?

The four-story brick townhouse features a symmetrical façade with decorative plasterwork and ornamental mascarons or consols. Original windows and doors remain intact. A courtyard passageway and service wings are typical of early 20th-century income houses.

Interesting facts

  • The building is part of a coherent trio (Nos. 1, 2, and 3) forming a harmonious square façade.

  • Levynskyi blended Ukrainian Modern motifs (often dubbed “Hutsul Secession”) with early Modern European trends.

  • The square has functioned as a cultural and political hub over the last century.

  • Building No. 3 exemplifies Levynskyi’s economic model of rental housing in geometric modern style.

What is there now?

Ground-floor premises now house private offices and shops. Upper floors contain apartments. Located within a protected heritage zone, the building undergoes periodic façade restoration.
