Every year on June 10, the world celebrates World Art Nouveau Day — an international initiative launched in 2013 by the Hungarian magazine Szecessziós Magazin together with the Museum of Applied Arts in Budapest. Today, the event is supported by the European networks Réseau Art Nouveau Network (Brussels) and the Art Nouveau European Route (Barcelona). The date was chosen intentionally, as two outstanding representatives of the Art Nouveau movement — Antoni Gaudí and Ödön Lechner — both passed away on June 10.
This year’s theme is WOMAN. Female figures, symbols, stories, and representations became one of the key elements of Art Nouveau art and aesthetics. In the Art Nouveau era, women were not only muses or decorative images, but also symbols of transformation, creativity, emancipation, and a new vision of the world. Through this year’s programme, participants will discover more about women in Lviv’s Art Nouveau heritage and their influence on art, architecture, fashion, and the city’s cultural life.
World Art Nouveau Days are not only an opportunity to rediscover the architecture and art of Lviv, but also an important tool for promoting Ukrainian cultural heritage within the European context. Especially today, during wartime, we strive to demonstrate that Ukrainian culture is an inseparable part of European heritage, and that Lviv is one of the key Art Nouveau centres in Eastern Europe.
This year’s theme allows for a deeper reflection on the role of women in shaping the aesthetics of Art Nouveau while also uncovering lesser-known stories of Lviv women — artists, patrons, and inspirational figures of the era. We warmly invite everyone to join the events and explore the multifaceted world of Lviv’s Art Nouveau together.
The project is supported by the European Commission’s Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) and will run throughout 2024–2027. The affiliated partners of the project in Ukraine are the Center for Urban History and Lviv Polytechnic National University.
As a reminder, in 2023 Lviv joined the international Réseau Art Nouveau Network (RANN), dedicated to the research and promotion of Art Nouveau heritage. Within this cooperation, the city is implementing the international project “Art Nouveau as a New Eurotopia. How the Past Can Be a Bridge to a Sustainable Future”, aimed at rethinking Art Nouveau heritage as a resource for contemporary cultural development and international dialogue.
