The restoration of the historic wooden entrance door at 1 Turetska Street has been completed. Before the works began, the door was in a significantly deteriorated condition and had lost many of its original elements over the years.

In particular, the metal grilles and a considerable number of decorative applied elements had been lost. The glazing, meeting stile and door handle were also missing. The wooden structure required substantial restoration, while both the entrance door and its door leaf had partially lost their original geometry.

One of the main challenges for the restorers was the numerous layers of paint accumulated over the years. In previous decades, the door had been repeatedly repainted and was covered with thick layers of red paint. During the restoration, the specialists carefully removed these layers, cleaned the wooden surfaces and prepared them for further conservation and restoration works.

Following the cleaning, the restorers carried out comprehensive work on the wooden elements. The geometry of the entrance door and its door leaf was restored, surviving details were carefully conserved, and missing decorative applied elements were recreated. This made it possible to restore the integrity of the door and bring back the distinctive character of its historic decoration.

Several lost elements had to be recreated from scratch. Based on drawings prepared by an architect of the Lviv Municipal Enterprise “Heritage Bureau”, the missing meeting stile was reconstructed and a new metal grille was produced. A new door handle was also installed.

An important part of the restoration was the reinstatement of the glazing, which had been completely missing before the works began. The new glass was installed in an opening frame, allowing it to be easily accessed and cleaned from both sides. This solution makes further maintenance of the historic entrance door considerably easier.

A new metal threshold was also installed. The works were carried out comprehensively — from the restoration of the wooden structure and decorative details to the reinstatement of functional elements necessary for the everyday use of the entrance door.

As a result of the restoration, it was possible not only to improve the technical condition of the door, but also to restore its missing details and return a coherent historic appearance. At the same time, the restored entrance door remains fully functional and suitable for everyday use by the residents of the building.

The works were carried out under a co-financing programme, which also enabled the residents to contribute directly to the preservation of the building’s historic elements.

The total cost of the restoration was UAH 145,000.
Residents’ contribution — UAH 43,500.
Funding under the “Art Nouveau as a New EUtopia” programme — UAH 101,500.
