Today marked the first day of the restoration school dedicated to an early 20th-century wooden gate.
The day began with an introduction of the participants to the course instructor – Maksym Chornyi, PhD, Assistant at the Department of Architectural and Art Restoration at Lviv Polytechnic National University.

The group toured the workshop and the AAR Department, followed by a lecture reviewing the heritage protection legislation currently in force in Ukraine.
After the theoretical part, participants began their first practical session. Today they learned techniques for removing foreign metal elements and nails; eliminating inappropriate inserts; and cleaning the surface from unstable contaminants.

Throughout the day, many important thoughts were shared, but the words of Maksym Chornyi resonated especially strongly:

“We respect the author. And in restoration, we base every decision on this respect for the creator. We strive to preserve authenticity as much as possible.”

This is the core principle from which true restoration begins. The five-day school has only just started, and the participants have many more discoveries, techniques, and unique hands-on experiences with an authentic object ahead of them.
