Today marked the first day of the Restoration School for Early 20th-Century Wooden Entrance Doors.

The day began with an introduction of the participants to the course instructor — PhD Maksym Chornyi, Assistant at the Department of Architectural and Art Restoration at Lviv Polytechnic National University. The group toured the workshop and the AAR Department, followed by a lecture dedicated to the overview of heritage protection legislation currently in force in Ukraine.

After the theoretical part, participants proceeded to their first practical session. Today they learned the techniques of removing foreign metal elements and nails; eliminating inappropriate inserts; and cleaning surfaces from unstable contaminants.

Throughout the day, many important ideas were voiced, but the words of Maksym Chornyi resonated especially strongly:
“We respect the author. And in restoration, we approach every decision with this respect in mind. We strive to preserve authenticity as much as possible.”

This is the core principle from which true restoration begins. The five-day school has only just started, and ahead of the participants lie many more discoveries, techniques, and unique hands-on work with an authentic historical object.
