“Last year, we held a similar event at the house on Rutkovycha Street, and the response was incredible. We are convinced that such initiatives not only introduce the art of restoration but also foster a responsible attitude toward Lviv’s historical monuments among its residents. Preserving these sites is a shared responsibility,” said Stefania Topylko, Director of LKP “Heritage Bureau.”

The building at 19 Nechuy-Levytskyi Street revealed unique Secessionist-style murals. On the ceiling of the stairwell, a hand-painted floral composition, an exquisite example of early 20th-century art, was discovered. According to restorer Iryna Hirna, local restorers were aware of the presence of these murals, as similar ones had been well-preserved in the neighboring mirror-image building. When residents of No. 19 contacted the specialists, probes were made to confirm the murals’ existence. Parts of the ceiling on the stairwell and the top (third) floor were uncovered. However, discovering murals throughout the entire staircase was an unexpected bonus for the team.

“These murals feature a delicately crafted floral composition, done by hand, making them unique. This is not a stencil but real art, showcasing the high craftsmanship of early 20th-century artists. These murals are one of the most striking examples of stairwell decor in Lviv, belonging to the Secession style — one of the most refined and rich styles in our city. Each element holds significant historical and artistic value for Lviv, as many similar works have been destroyed by unprofessional repairs,” added restorer Iryna Hirna.

The residential building was constructed between 1906 and 1907 according to a design by architect Yakub Rysiak. It is a three-story structure with an “L”-shaped plan. The main part of the building faces the street, while the inner wing forms an annex. The façade along the street line is adorned with decorative features. The layout and decorative elements in the Secessionist style (including mascarons under the cornice) mirror the design of the adjacent building at No. 17.

As a reminder, last year LKP “Heritage Bureau” together with the restoration workshop “Harda” held a master class on uncovering historical polychrome murals in a heritage building located at 12 I. Rutkovycha Street. Around 50 participants took part in that master class.
