Today in Lviv, the first stage of the Summer School of Restoration began — a five-day intensive dedicated to the theme of mascarons and stucco decoration. This educational course is designed for students and graduates specializing in “restoration” and aims to provide them with practical experience working with cultural heritage sites.

The uniqueness of the program lies in combining theoretical preparation with hands-on work on a real heritage site, under the guidance of Anna Kudzi (Poland) — a restorer with many years of experience, lecturer at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, who has repeatedly implemented Polish-Ukrainian projects in Lviv, Zhovkva, and Kamianets-Podilskyi.

What happened on the first day:

  • Introductory lecture by Anna Kudzi on the basics and principles of stucco restoration;

  • Lecture by Olena Savchuk on approaches to preserving historical elements;

  • Meeting with the director of LKP “Heritage Bureau” and mayor’s advisor, Liliya Onyshchenko;

  • Introduction to the project and the restoration site;

  • Shared welcome lunch for participants and instructors;

  • Visit to the site, where participants inspected the working area and climbed the scaffolding;

  • Samples taken from a mascaron and doors for further study.

Ahead lies microscopic analysis of the collected samples and four more days of on-site practice.

This course is a valuable opportunity for young restorers to gain practical skills needed to work with historic objects and to exchange experience with recognized European experts.

The Summer School in Lviv became possible thanks to the implementation of the international project “Art Nouveau as a New Eurotopia. How the Past Can Be a Bridge to a Sustainable Future”, funded by the Creative Europe program in cooperation with partners from the Réseau Art Nouveau Network (RANN). The project aims to research and promote Art Nouveau heritage, to reinterpret it through the lens of sustainable development, and to create new educational and cultural opportunities for young professionals in different European countries, including Ukraine.
