This year, the Heritage Bureau in Lviv, together with European partners, will implement a project dedicated to the study and promotion of the heritage of art nouveau, an artistic style that swept the world at the end of the 19th century – at the beginning of the 19th century-20th century. The heritage of art nouveau in Lviv is quite rich, and left behind not only an architectural legacy. Unfortunately, this topic is not sufficiently researched.
In the following publications, we will talk about the formation of this style and its trace in the heritage of Lviv.
Until the beginning of the 19th century, the territory of the current E. Konovaltsia Street was a suburban area with private estates, villas and parks. In the years 1900-1930, Konovaltsia Street and the streets adjacent to it became the site of a lively construction movement and were developed in accordance with the city’s master plan under the leadership of the chief architect Yulian Zakharevich.
At that time, tenement houses were interspersed with prestigious villas, and it is one such villa that stands out today with its rich Art Nouveau decoration and recent restoration.

This villa was built in 1904-1905 by Lviv architects Mykhailo Makovich and Stanislav Dec and is located in a row of manor buildings on the street.
The house is brick, one-story on a high plinth, with a mezzanine and an attic, L-shaped in plan. Here you can see amazing stucco decor, expressive mascarones, stucco eaves in the form of sunflowers above the window openings, and forged elements of the balcony and fence with plant-geometric ornaments. It is noticeable that the villa was created with love for details, since Mykhailo Makovych himself built it for his own residence.
The building is included in the register of architectural monuments of local importance.
