This year, Lviv will join the European cultural community even more. For the first time, Lviv will officially celebrate the World Art Nouveau Days, or Secession or Art Nouveau, as they are usually called in Ukraine, which take place every year in European countries. The Heritage Bureau in Lviv invites everyone to join a series of events dedicated to the secessionist heritage of the city.

The event will take place during June 8-11. This year’s theme is about light.

Every year on June 10, the world celebrates an international holiday – World Art Nouveau Day. In 2013, the Hungarian magazine Szecessziós Magazin initiated the organization of this holiday in cooperation with the Museum of Applied Arts, which is located in Budapest. Since then, the annual Art Nouveau Day takes place with the support of the European movement Réseau Art Nouveau Network (Brussels) and Art Nouveau European Route (Barcelona). The date of its holding was chosen on June 10, because it was on this day that two outstanding representatives of this style died: Antonio Gaudi and Eden Lechner.

“World Art Nouveau Days are not only interesting excursions and new knowledge, but also an important step in restoring Ukrainian identity and cultural heritage. In the conditions of war, we demonstrate to the European community our rich heritage and restore our place in the European family. During the events, residents and guests of the city will be able to learn more about Lviv’s rich Art Nouveau heritage and why it is important to preserve it,” the organizers say.

The project is implemented with the support of the Executive Agency for Education and Culture (EACEA) of the European Commission and will last from January 2024 to September 2027. You can follow all project activities on the project’s social networks: FacebookInstagramLinkedIn

The partners of the project in Ukraine are the Center of Urban History and the National University of Lviv Polytechnic.

Last year the city of Lviv joined the international Reseau Art Nouveau Network (RANN), which is engaged in the study and promotion of the heritage of art nouveau, or secession or modern, as it is usually called in Ukraine. Therefore, Lviv now has a platform to popularize its secessionist heritage at the international level, and for four years, together with European partners, it will implement the project “Art Nouveau as a New European Utopia. How the past can be a bridge to a sustainable future”

The full program of international partners is available on the website Réseau Art Nouveau Network (Brussels).
