The Réseau Art Nouveau Network(RANN), which celebrates its 25th anniversary, organizes together with urban.brussels an international conference dedicated to the restoration of Art Nouveau architectural heritage. 2024 also marks the 30th anniversary of the publication of the UNESCO Declaration of Turin, which established the principles of theory and practice for restoring this heritage with respect for its material characteristics.
The conference aims to answer the following questions:
Has your country officially adopted the Turin Declaration and implements it in the theory and practice of restoration?
What are the benefits and limitations of the Turin Declaration, especially in the context of today’s challenges of sustainable development?
What is needed to update the general theories of architectural restoration in the 21st century and how does this affect professionals working on restoration sites?
What are some examples of successful practice that can help answer these questions, particularly regarding intervention methods and techniques?

We invite architectural historians, art critics, architects, engineers and craftsmen who deal daily with Art Nouveau plans, structures and materials to answer these questions.
The conference will be divided into three sections:
1964-1994: Thirty Years of Restoration History: Insights and Prospects
1994-2024: Theory and practice of restoration
2024-2050: Sustainable restoration as a foundation for sustainable and informed communities
Further information and the original texts of the Venice Charter and the Turin Declaration can be found at the link below.
