In April – May of this year, the Lviv Municipal Art Center, in cooperation with the Ukrainian Catholic University, organizes a cycle of four lectures dedicated to the historical heritage of Lviv architecture of the late 19th – early 20th centuries and activities of its leading creators.
We will talk about the four most outstanding architects of Lviv in the 1870s–1910s: the founder of the then Lviv School of Architecture, Professor Julian Oktavian Zaharievich (1837–1898); son of Yulian (1871–1937), pioneer of reinforced concrete construction in Galicia, Alfred Zaharievicha; Ivan Levinskyi (1851–1919), a leading construction entrepreneur of the royal capital city of Lviv; as well as Tadeusz Obminskyi (1874–1932), a prominent designer of Lviv art nouveau buildings. The members of this quartet carried out, often cooperating with each other, the most important architectural and construction projects of Lviv during the largest construction “boom” in the history of the city. The creation of the buildings of the Polytechnic, the City Theater, the railway station, the Chamber of Commerce, the best bank and hospital buildings, hotels, shopping centers, residential architecture complexes is connected with their activities.
The proposed lecture series will present the materials collected in the process of preparing the program of iconographic and visual studies, which is being developed at the Ukrainian Catholic University. Within its framework, architectural monuments are studied as a kind of historical documents – bearers of symbolic meanings that speak their own visual language and have their own content.
The developer of the series of lectures “History in the mirror of architecture” is associate professor of the Department of History of UCU, candidate of art history Mr. Ihor Zhuk, who will act as a lecturer. The series will consist of four lectures supplemented by slide presentations.
Dates and topics are as follows:
April 18 – “Yulian Zaharievich – architect-intellectual of the age of historicism”;
April 25 – “Alfred Zaharievich – pioneer of reinforced concrete architecture of Galicia”;
May 2 – “Ivan Levynskyi – the godfather of the Lviv construction business”;
